Goals & Objectives
SWBAT: Identify the role the Federalist Papers played in seeking support for the ratification of the Constitution. Students will demonstrate their knowledge with 80% accuracy in a written essay asking what the Federalist Papers are and their purpose.
SWBAT: Define the role factions play within our government, the need for checks and balances, and why an independent judiciary is so important. Students will demonstrate their knowledge with 80% accuracy in a written essay asking them to define the focus papers and to give examples of each and their effect within our current government.

Vocabulary
Students will complete a modified foursquare vocabulary sheet for each of the following vocabulary words. The students will rate themselves on their knowledge of the word by circling a number listed 1-4. Students will then define the word in their. Students will also create a pictogram that will help them remember the word. The pictogram must use color. Finally, the student has a personal space to use for any additional help they may need for the word i.e. translation into home language. The vocabulary words come directly from the state standard:

Lesson Introduction
Teacher will begin the lesson by showing the movie "Hot Coffee" as an introduction to the idea independent judiciary which is covered in Federalist Paper 78. During the movie the teacher will stop the movie occasionally and discuss the main idea behind each topic covered. This will help the students tie the movie into the material we will be covering in the lesson. Students will be answering guiding questions, while the movie is playing, that pertain to what will be covered in the lesson.
Content Delivery
- Teacher will provide instruction through the use of this presentation
- Teacher will perform occasional checks for understanding that are currently built into the presentation using popcorn style questioning or through the use of equity cards.
- Teacher will introduce the student engagement activity which is the last slide of the presentation
Student Engagement
- During the presentation students will complete the Federalist Papers cornell notes
- As a class, we are going to develop a lesson plan that will be used throughout GGUSD to help 8th grade teachers bring the ideas of the Federalist Papers to their students prior to them coming to high school. I will work on the curriculum it is your job to develop the visuals that will correspond with our lesson.
What I need from you are:
1. Create posters that define what the Federalist Papers are and what they argue for.
2. Focus students attention to the 3 main Federalist Papers covered 10, 51, and 78.
3. Provide a pleasing; adolescent friendly visual representation and definition of each will do this.
Directions:
1. Use any form of media available to create this poster i.e. poster board, colored pencils, markers, computers, etc…
2. You must include some form of visual representation i.e hand drawn, computer generated, magazine cut out
3. The assignment must be in color
4. You must work together with another person (No more than 3, No less than 2)
Demonstrated Learning
- (Formative) Students will complete their Federalist Papers Guiding Questions
- (Formative) Checks for understanding are currently built into the presentation. Students will pair-share with their neighbors and will be called upon to answer the guiding questions.
- (Summative) Students will complete their poster giving proper definition to the Federalist Papers and identify the three focus papers. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the Federalist Papers through their design and definitions of the poster.
